LO2: Treatment

TREATMENT
Personal Identity

THE BRIEF
I have been commissioned by The Workstation to create a photographic collection and promotional poster for an exhibition on the theme ‘identity’. Each collection is to contain five final pieces of original photographs. For this unit I will take ten photographs using a range of photography techniques, manipulate them to create my final five pieces based on the theme.

CONCEPT IDEA
My final idea follows the basis of personal identification. Most of the time you identify someone by the way they look, as we are all different. Another way of personal identification is the fingerprint. Our fingerprints are all different so it is very easy to identify specific people based on this.
Using this knowledge I thought about merging these two together. A person’s face distinguishes them from another person so I thought maybe add the thumbprint to their face. The brief states that I have to create 5 final piece photographs. This meant I had to create 5 photographs that are different and also follow a theme. I decided that I would show people doing different activities that define them as a person as this is another way of identifying someone.
Photograph 1 – This would be a photograph of someone sat in front of the TV. I would use a wide angle or fish eye lens.  I would then place the model to the side or focal points of the photograph and show the rest of the lounge/living room.

Photograph 2 – This photograph would show someone playing a sport. They will be in the process of doing an action associated with the sport. I will then use a slow shutter speed to allow for a motion blur in the background but still have the model focused.

Photograph 3 – This would be a portrait photograph of an elderly person. They will be sat against a white background with zero expression shown on their face. The shot type will be a medium close-up.

Photograph 4 – This will be a landscape photograph with a model centred and they arms raised in the air. They will be looking directly at the camera with the landscape in the back. For this to be achieved I will need to use a smaller aperture so I have a deeper depth of field.

Photograph 5 – This would be a photograph containing the eye of a model. The eye will then contain the thumbprint of the person. To achieve this I will need to use a Macro lens and a good light source as photographs like this can be very dark.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Jane is a 21 year old, British, female, Art student. She enjoys going to galleries and museums to look at quirky and famous art and photography. She particularly likes the photographer’s Beatriz AG and KatB photography.

Jane would fit under the C1 category as she come from a middle class family but is not in managerial position.

KEY MILESTONES

Taking Photographs      11th May 2015

Editing photographs      18th May 2015

Launch date                   12th June 2015

EQUIPMENT

I need the camera to take the actual photographs. I will then need a standard kit lens, portraiture lens, macro lens and a fish eye lens. I will always need these, as it will allow me to get a certain look to individual photographs. Another piece of equipment I will need is a tripod, as it will allow me to keep the camera steady when taking my photographs. I will need a computer with Adobe Photoshop installed to edit the photos later in the production.

PROPS AND MODELS

My models will be Dennis Bennett, Finley Mercer, Jonathan Sanders, Stephen Pennington and Joe Flanagan.

The only props I will be using are A computer mouse, keyboard and monitor for my ‘Hacker’ photograph. None of my other photographs require props.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

I will have to gain permissions from models and for locations I take photographs of. I can take pictures of public areas but I will have to ask for permission if the land is private. I should always check whether the land is public or private. If I am unsure whether a location is public or private I will either look for signs stating so or ask an authoritative figure at the location.

A recce sheet is a form I will have to fill out on all the locations I go to, to make sure my models, the people around me and I are safe in that location. We use them if anything goes wrong and to make sure the location is safe so no one is injured.

A risk assessment is a form I will have to fill out for all the locations I go to, to make sure my models, the people around me and I are safe in that location. I will list the dangers each location could make us face and how likely the danger will be. It also states the actions that will need to be taken if a problem does arise.

LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Copyright (©)

The exclusive legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to use the intellectual property they have created. It means people have to gain permission from the originator to use it.

It is important when taking photographs that I don't take pictures of anything that is copyright protected like literature, logos and film posters. This is Copyright Infringement. If I do take pictures of these things I will have to pay a large sum of money to the owner of the copyrighted item. To avoid this I will need to get permission from the originator.

Permission and Release Forms

To avoid getting people in our picture we can either make sure we frame and focus on a specific item and not include people in the background. Another way to avoid this we can make sure we go to location at a certain time of day to reduce the amount of people that may be likely to feature in the photograph.

I will have to gain permissions from models and for locations I take photographs of. I can take pictures of public areas but I will have to ask for permission if the land is private. I should always check whether the land is public or private. If I am unsure whether a location is public or private I will either look for signs stating so or ask an authoritative figure at the location.

I will avoid taking photos in public using a telephoto lens, as I will get in to trouble. I should also avoid taking pictures of families and children. I should always check who is in the photograph.

Legal and Ethical

The reasons why we have to think out representation are:

1. You don't want to stereotype somebody based on the way they look and dress, because it can show someone in a negative way and could easily be an opposite type of persona.

2. You have to be especially careful when it comes to discriminating race, religion, disability, age and class.

3. If you are using a model you have to make sure the model is happy with the photograph and happy with what it is being use for.

CONTINGENCIES

As a back-up idea I will show the identity of sports. This will incorporate sportmen and women with equipment associated with the sport or actions associated with the sports.

LO4 / LO5: Final Photographs

EYE

In this photograph I wanted to connote the beauty of the iris when exposed to light. This links my theme as you can use eyes as a form of identification.

ELDERLY GENTLEMEN

This photograph is meant to connote the identity of age and the many features it can change on an individuals face. I changed the background of the photograph to follow my theme.

SKI VLLAGE HAND STAND

This photograph was taken to connote how much we have to rely on our hands. The model is only using his hands to support him which is why I placed the handprints made of fingerprints.

LANDSCAPE

This photograph is there to connote the natural world. The model enjoys walking in this particular area which is why I chose him to be in it.

HACKER

This picture tries to connote the hidden identities. I used a hacker as it allowed me to show their identity without showing their actual face.

LO3 & 4 - Photograph Evaluation - Adobe Bridge

Ski Village Hand Stand

This photograph was taken spontaneously. I think I could use this instead of the living room photograph as lighting will not be appropriate. I used the Camera with a standard kit lens to take this photograph. As you can see from the screenshot above I used a small aperture. This has allowed me create a deep depth of field and have some focus on the background. Seeing as this photograph was spontaneous composition was not brilliant and means that the model is not positioned to the rule of thirds. To improve I will need to take this photograph again and position the model using rule of thirds. I think a strength of this photograph is the landscape in the background.

Ski Village Hand Stand

This photo consists of my model doing a handstand facing a landscape. I used a standard kit lens on the Canon 650 D camera. I will be editing this to make his body a white silhouette and then applying the thumbprint over the silhouette. This will mean the model can be the object of the photograph but also show the separation between the model and landscape. This photograph was taken as a landscape and has the model in the foreground and a scenic landscape in the background. I used a standard kit lens for this with an aperture of f5. This allowed me to have a deep depth of field and focus on both the foreground and background. I set the ISO to 400 as the sky had slight cloud cover and made the scene dark. The model is centred to the rule of thirds so focus is drawn to him.

Burbage Brook Landscape

This is the photograph linked to my 'Landscape' sketch. I will be using and editing this photograph. I will be changing the brightness and contrast of the sky and applying a blue tinge to it. I will then be putting the thumbprint over the body of the model. I used the camera and a Fish-eye lens. I have centred the model using the rule of thirds as it will draw the viewers eye to the model. I used a small aperture to help show the landscape. I used a higher shutter speed as the fish eye messed up the light and meant to shutter speed needed to be quicker to improve lighting. The fish-eye lens allowed me to make the model look small compared to the landscape due to the lens allowing me to show more of the landscape.

Padley Gorge Landscape

I took this photo to see what the model would look like in a different location. I do not feel this photograph is what I wanted to show based on landscape. I used a Standard Kit Lens for this photograph which meant I did not show the landscape as well as I could of using the Fish-eye lens. The area was very bright so I had to change the settings to a faster shutter speed (1/1250). This reduced the amount of light being let into the lens.

Eye

This photograph is a macro photograph using a macro lens. I used a Canon 650 D . I also used the flash on the camera for lighting. Using the flash will help me in the later stages of editing as it makes the iris create a very beautiful and detailed pattern. (Things removed about phone camera) I took this photo because I know eyes can be use for identification and also the iris has a very beautiful pattern I wanted to capture in a photograph.  The iris, pupil and sclera in this photograph is centred to the rule of thirds so focus is centred on those parts of the eye. I like this photograph as the detail in the iris is captured well and also can be edited easily to improve it. I will be adding more detail to the iris and also adding the thumbprint to the pupil.

Elderly Gentlemen

This is a portrait picture of an elderly gentlemen that uses a close up to show the age of the model. This is a useable photograph as the expression of the model and the focus are good and show details on the models face that help connote the age. This photo solely focuses on the model in the foreground and only shows a plain background. This will allow me to edit the background and place the thumbprints as like a collage behind the model.  As the room was quite bright I had to lower the shutter speed to allow less light in. I also changed the ISO to be less sensitive to the light. I used a standard kit lens to take this as I did not have a portraiture lens.

Hacker

This photograph was taken using a standard kit lens. I changed the ISO so the sensor was less sensitive to light.  I also disabled the flash for this photograph as it was messing with the lighting. I used an aperture of f5.6 to focus more on the model than the background as I would have been editing this out in post-production. This photo is good due to correct lighting and framing. It centres the models head to the rule of thirds and also the computer monitor.

LO3: Lesson Objectives

  1. I need to take the rest of my ten pictures
  2. I need to evaluate the 10 images
  3. I need to edit the 5 final photographs
  4. I need to talk about changes I may have made to certain photographs.
This fulfils LO3
